Hello,
I bought a Costco utility sink and I want to put it in my garage right where there is a cleanout sticking out of my wall.

The cleanout is PCV measuring 2.375 (2 3/8) inches outer diameter.
I bought a P trap kit that its outer diameter is 1.5 inches.

See attached photos.

I spent 1.5 hrs at Home Depot and another 1.5 hrs at Lowes and I can't figure out what I need to join them. Any help would be appreciated!

That is the OD of a standard 2" PVC pipe.

You say it was a clean out, so did you cut off the plug fitting that was attached?

Before piping into that "clean out", you need to know the piping layout of that line.
  1. Is it going to drain into the sewer properly?
  2. Is it going to interfere with any other fixtures attached to that line, drain and/or vent?
  3. Is this installation going to be properly vented?
I'm a little concerned that you can verify these things, but if you can, you should be able to find what you need at Home Depot or Lowes. You will need to cut the wall from around the stub and install a 2" coupling, 2"x1 1/2" bushing, and a 1 1/2" spigot/slip joint fitting. Your P-trap horizontal piece will slide into the slip joint fitting just fine.

Hello MicEd69,
I'm going to answer your questions the best I can.

“You say it was a clean out, so did you cut off the plug fitting that was attached?”
Yes I did cut it… there was a cap glued to it.

“1. Is it going to drain into the sewer properly?”
This is a newly constructed condo… yes it is. That cleanout was recently snaked and scoped with a camera by a plumber because of a blockage from another unit in my building.

“2. Is it going to interfere with any other fixtures attached to that line, drain and/or vent?”
I don’t know. This cleanout port is in the garage and its attached to a kitchen sink that’s right above it on the 2nd story.

“3. Is this installation going to be properly vented?”
Does it need to? I can add an air admittance valve if needed.

I'm going to take your list with me next time I go to the home improvement center. Thank you!

You need to put a cleanout back in its place. Put a 2" wye and a cleanout off the branch. Then get a 2" x 1 1/2" bushing a small piece of 1 1/2" and then a 1 1/2" trap adapter. It may not be up to code adding the sink on that 2" stack to who knows where.
