We bought our home about a year ago. I had the water tested and they said the water was hard. I understand the extreme basics (talking a 3rd grade level at best) and know the blue cartridges in the pictures are sedimate filters. I've already changed them.

The part that confuses me is the big tank. I thought it was a water softener but it appears it's not if my water is hard? I asked a plumber friend who was too busy to look first hand... he said it's probably meant to fix the pH instead of treat hard water.

I ran a search on stickers and numbers that I could find on it with Google but they all point me to setting the controls so it cycles. What I really need to find out is exactly what I have, what I fill the tank with, and how to fill it.

Most maintenance done on this house was last done years before we bought the home. I'm sure it needs filled. It has the date 11-4-10 written on it so I'm pretty sure that's when the system was installed.

Any assistance at all that you could provide is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Water softeners are not a "set it and forget it" machine. They need annual maintenance to ensure the resin levels are correct and its treating what its supposed to be treating.

Ground water tables change all the time, maybe something has changed with yours and the resin bed isnt picking it up.

This is not something you should bother messing with without proper training. Best option is to call a certified water treatment company, have a water test done and have your levels adjusted with the proper resin.

It's not a water softener. I found out on Reddit's forum... and verified with a number they gave me of the manufactorer. It's an neutralizer that helps with the pH. Thanks anyway though.

Just another tip for anyone with a similar issue... it is basically a "set it and forget it" unit (per the manufacturer and online searches). Just dump in the Calcite every year to the fill line. Thanks again though.
