Hi!

My toilet and bathtub recently started developing the following problem:

- The water in the bathtub (which is frequently used as a shower) starts raising up while we are taking a shower and drains very slowly.

- The water level in the toilet drops over time.

Both share, as far as I can see, the same plumbing vent.

Both fixtures are many decades old and cannot be replaced at this time (it would mean redoing the entire bathroom..).

The drain of the bath itself and its overflow seem free of hairs and other similar gunk.

The toilet seems to work as well as a toilet this age can (there a misflush once in a while but nothing which a second flush cannot fix)...

Thinking the problem might be with the vent pipe we flushed water through it from the roof using a garden hose as I had seen recommended on a few places on the web...

It looks like it might have helped because there is not as much water accumulating in the bottom of the bath when we take a shower and it drains pretty fast.

However before we did this the water had already begun accumulating less so we are not fully sure if it's the garden hose "operation" which did something or if the symptoms of the problems simply changed...

The water in the toilet seems to drop faster now to but it might just be because we are paying more attention to things like that...

I am not quite sure where to look now...

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Nick

quick test. when using the shower and it starts to back up, turn off the water in shower and flush the toilet flush the toilet.
Does the shower still drain at the same rate?
Does the toilet flush okay?
If yes Than your tub drain has a partial blockage. have the tub drain cleaned by someone how knows how.
If the tub drain is using the toilet vent it maybe causing a problem with the vent for the toilet thus possibly causing a siphon on the toilet bowl.

Does any water from the flushed toilet seem to back up out of the shower drain? If yes than you may have a partial stoppage in the main and may require snaking out.
