Hello, I am new to the forum, I am a renter in a corner 2 story townhome. My upstairs bathroom toilet overflowed on Friday 9/26 and unfortunately my sons did not stop it nor clean it up--so It ran for 6 hrs straight. When I got home that night I cleaned it up turned the water off and a maybe like 25 mins later I heard dripping down stairs in the kitchen and when I got there my kitchen ceilings paint had a huge bubble filled with water that eventually popped in front of my eyes!! My kitchen ceiling is now very limp looking and of course has a large water spot. It has dried now but It still has a very soft feeling to it. I am horrified because I don't know what to do. I am starting to notice my upstairs bedroom has a smell in the carpet because my bedroom area is by the bathroom where the leak was at so my carpet was wet and that actually took at least 3 days to dry completely because I didn't have a fan and only was able to have my bedroom windows open.

Is there anything I can do to hopefully forgo getting a commercial service involved as I have no money!!

The fee for a commercial water damage service is much cheaper than a mold removal company. Just something to ponder.

ouch, you missed your window of opportunity

you should have pulled up the carpet, wet vac everything. as soon as you got home. and directed fans to dry out the wet carpet. the smell you are smelling is soured carpet/wood and mold

probably insulation in between floors also

pull all the carpets, pads and put on the curb for the trash guy.

sit down with the kids, show them where the water cut offs under the sinks and behind toilets are
also, show them the breaker box and how to turn it off

gas meter? show them how to turn off and dial 911 if they smell gas

get a pump sprayer, mix 3/4 bleach to 1/4 water and spray where you think mold is. open windows

others might say 1/4 bleach, i tend to over kill
