Tips Connecting To Iron Drainage Pipe?

We are in the planning stage of adding a shower to an existing 1/2 bathroom.

The most difficult aspect of this is how to connect the new shower drain pipe into our existing iron drainage pipe.

We are especially interested in how others have solved this problem and appreciate any tips or suggestions.

What type and size pipe are you tying into? Is it cast iron or galvanized steel? A picture would be a big help.

Yes it is cast iron.

Do not know size?
Please tell me how to measure.

Hi havasu,

Am attaching a photo of our cast iron drainage pipe.

Looks like 4״ CI. it's straight forward.

Materials:

1 4x2 wye
2 heavyweight Nohub 4" couplings (huskies)
1 2" Nohub coupling
Band iron or threaded rod with 4" hangers

Identify location to tap into line, make sure you have adequate support on either side, measure the 4" base of your wye, and snap the line accordingly.

Connect your wye to line with huskies, connect shower drain to wye with Nohub.

If not all I wrote makes sense, then hire an expert.

think it might require a vent ?

believe i read some where about each fixture shall have a vent.

i wonder what that word shall means ?


while i was undrr the house with tools and material, I wouuld remove and replace as much of that cast and galv. pipe as possible.
it is rusted and the coating is gone

while the wall is open you will need a vent from the new shower up thru the floor.
you can tie the vent into the toilet,vent at 42-48'' off the floor
