stopper stranded in tub overflow tube

While investigating a stopped tub drain, I found that in the overflow tube, the lever-type rod rotted and separated from the stopper(close to it). Is there a way to retrieve the stopper from the bottom of the tube?

Find an acces point for the overflow piping for ex.crawlspace or removable sheetrock.then disconect the piping and pull it out.also a more simpler aproach will be to stick a magnet down the overflow or a grab hook both sold in homedepo

Try fishing for it with a coat hanger through the overflow plate. It's a lot easier than it sounds.

Thanks for the replies, I've been trying the fishing approach, no luck yet but will keep trying.

A spring grabber MIGHT be able to pull it out. If not, a retriever head on a snake if the coat hanger doesn't get it.
