Sounds crazy

Has anyone ever heard of a gas hot water tank temperature dial turning ITSELF down? I went to run the shower last night--no hot water. Pilot light was still lit, but the dial was all the way down to "pilot light". The tank is old, about 13 years. But I don't see how that could have happened. Has anyone ever heard of such a crazy thing?!

I would suspect some sort of critter, such as a cat. I believe it would be impossible for the dial to move by itself, unless you live in Amityville!
