Small car top PVC fishing rod holder

I'm contemplating building a PVC rod holder for my small car. The roof rack distance from back to front is 3' 17". Can I get away with a 2" PVC pipe or should I go with 2 1/2" or 3? I would put pipe insulation inside to cushion the rod. The rod is 9' long.

Assuming your concern is for support spacing, 2" would be fine. I would base it more on what works best for fitting of the rod and insulation.
Although you could get by with the lighter weight pipe, I'd go with 2" schedule 40 PVC.

If you have any left over, you can make a sand spike rod holder.
