I am remodeling a shower and I got the concrete busted up around the shower drain. The old shower drain flange is cast iron and rusted pretty badly. As you can see in the picture there is a 4" PVC pipe under the cast iron drain flange. Looks like it is glued into the 4" PVC drain pipe. I was informed there is a 2" cast iron drain pipe inside this 4" pvc pipe, and the pvc is a sleeve over the cast iron drain and is there to help support the drain flange. Should I dig down to the ptrap and see if it is cast iron or pvc and go from there or could I just cut off this flange and attach a new plastic one to it? As an FYI the rest of the drain/venting is pvc, including the main drain (3" pvc).

Thank you for your help.

if it was me. your already there. dig that old trap up.

replace with a new trap and shower drain.

do you know how to set a shower drain ?

is it going to be a tile floor or prefab?

if tile, you need some shower pan material..

they make 2 different type shower drains...one for tile and for prefab....it matters which one

Thanks Fordo. I plan to install a mud bed shower pan (pre-slope and slope for tile). Going to add tile to floor. Plan to use the Oatey/Sioux Chief 3 piece shower drain. When replacing the ptrap and drain, I was going to ensure the pipe extended past the floor and cut to size once I started on the floor.

Yes that is the plan: replace trap before anything else. Close floor, then add pre-slope. Go from there.

This is what I got: PVC trap. My thoughts are to cut below the drain flange and replace with a new one. Would you go ahead and replace the trap since it is exposed?

Thanks!

I'm going to replace the trap since I have access to it. Once I get the new trap installed, can I run a pipe above floor level, refill the hole, and then cut off the pipe to the proper height when I get ready to install the pre-slope mortar bed? I plan to install an Oatey/Sioux Chief drain.

Thanks!

I'm replacing the trap because it is easy to get the sawzall to it and there is a ton of crap built up in the trap and the pipe the drain was connected to. Super cheap parts and an easy fix so might as well why it is opened up.
Thanks for all the help guys!
