After 23 years and 3 months, I noticed iron is beginning to drain during regeneration (see below attachment). I have a Kinetico water softener that has 2 tanks. A representative came to test the water and found .6 of iron in my water. The representative stated that my current softener has lasted for a long time but is aging and that is why I am showing iron crystals found in my laundry tub when the water softener is regenerating. The representative noticed that I did not have a sediment filter on my system when it was installed some 23 years ago. He stated that the iron will not effect my well or septic tank and that I can leave things as they are or consider buying a new Kinetico water softener system with a sediment filter. The new system would come with a 10 year warranty at $3500. What are thoughts about the iron problem and should I replace my system now or wait until later. Thanks in advanced.

I would add a sediment filter ahead of the softener, for about $50, and then buy some of the best salt available and regenerate the softener, and just use it. But maybe our softeners last so long because I blow them out with compressed air every fall, that agitates the media, and exposes new surfaces.
