The burner is very rusty and especially the vertical pipe looks deeply rusted.

I have no knowledge about how this gas burner works. I am wondering whether there is a valve under the subfloor in the crawlspace? If there is a valve and the valve is not rusty, then I should be safe, right?

Should I have any gas leak concerns? It seems to me that the burner pipe is easy to replace but the vertical pipe is fixed and hard to replace.

To fix the problem should I hire a plumber or fireplace guy?

I wouldn't like the looks of it for water, I can't comment on the gas part of it because I don't work with it.

My 2 cents.

Safety concerns such as this should not be left to the opinion of people on the internet looking at a picture. There's a lot we cannot see. Hire a licenced professional to come give you their opinion. An hours service call is definitely worth it for safety.

looks to me that the log lighter has seen use. nothing wrong with that

do you see that round chrome thing to the right of the fireplace on the floor ?
that is the gas valve, insert the key into the valve and turn it.
gas will star to come out of the valve in the fire place.

see the screw ? loosen screw, that is a door, to adjust air.
light the log lighter, then move the door open or close to achieve a pretty blue flame, yellow is bad, blue is good
when you have it adjusted. tighten screw

ok, that is how it works, and how to adjust it...

I know, that the log lighter is cast iron not steel, I suggest having a plumber, remove the log lihter, clean it up with a wire brush
remove all rust. then paint it with a fire box heat resistant paint.

he will not have that on his truck, so before you call your plumber, buy a can at a big box store,
along with a wire brush..
