Hello all, Im a DIYer and am learning a lot of new things. Im installing a sewer cleanout for my home in the backyard, got the sewer line dug up and will do the double cleanout that goes both directions with the pvc sticking up. I have a plugged sewer line (not too bad, drains still working most of the time) but in order to snake it I am doing this now, house was built in 1959 and didnt have a cleanout.

The dilemma Ive found is this. After getting the sewer line located and dug, on the way down digging their is a gas line about 3 to 4 feet directly above the sewer line in the same line right over the sewer line. My question is can I tilt the two pipes coming up at a 30 40 degree angle and then put in the elbow with two smaller lengths of pvc straight up at the end to avoid the gas line, will it still cleanout easily? Or, do I need to have someone (or myself) come in and simply route the gasline around where the sewer cleanout is be, keeping everything straight and vertical? The gas line is pvc (wierd I thought but it is definitely the gas line as it leads from the meter).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Naz

If the line is 4' deep then what you need is two Y's facing in opposite directions. Then use a 45 into each Y and run the lines to the surface with a clean out plug in each. If you just use a two way clean out at 4' deep it would be tough to direct the snake in the direction you wanted. A Y and 45 will put the snake in the desired direction.

ok john that makes sense im such a newbie i have to lookup what a y, tee etc is but after I found them i got it. i may have mistyped my info, the gas line is about 2 feet down, and the sewer pipe is close to six feet down. I should have typed the difference between the two lines is four feet with the gas line directly above it, and your suggestion definitely solves the problem then. Sounds good, thank you and thats will ill go for.

would a 90 degree elbow in place of the 45 also work or using an offset in place of the 45? and would my cleanout pipes going up to the surface be at an angle with the 45 ?

No don't use 90's. They are harder to get a large snake through. You can roll the Y's at a slight angle then use the 45's to square the risers up. That should get them past the gas line.

oh ok got it good enough for me. Thank you John I do appreciate it and will go for that route exactly, problem solved and the cleanout pipes wont be touching the gas line. Thanks again
