I just purchased a foreclosure that has a leaking backflow preventer, probably due to not being drained for couple winters.

I'm wondering if you experts could help me with advice for DIY to get this swapped out. I have the replacement 975XL on hand.

I'm guessing that I can just cut it on the left side and wrench the entire unit out. Then I would just wrench the new one on, and I just need to figure out how to hook up the left side where I cut it?

I'm guessing I could get a 'sleeve' like fitting that they currently have on there to hook up the left side?

Is there an easier, better way? Sorry for the lack of plumbing terminology

These devices should be tested yearly by a certified back flow tester. You are not allowed to repair or replace the device with out that license. Call your water company and they will give you a list of certified testers in your area. There are records kept on when the device was last tested or repaired. The water company can turn off your water if you don't comply with there regulations on back flow devices. These devices have a serial # that is registered at your location and if the device is changed there must be paperwork filed with the water company by a certified tester.

John,

Thanks for your response. I don't have a water company as i'm on my own well. I did look it up on the MN website and it looks like they do require a licensed plumber to do installs.
