I started bathroom remodel and found this. Looks like repair to broken pipe. Should I worry about this, or leave it alone? Have not had problems before the remodel so don't expect any, but better to address this now that sheetrock is off.

I would fix properly if line backs up it is going to flood you out buy a band to connect pvc to cast

I just saw something similar in pictures from another home only it was on metal pipes. I'm starting to think the black stuff might be a protective layer rather than any sort of patching. It could be there to insulate against the concrete.

My house doesn't have any concrete floors so I wouldn't know.

I think journeyman meant something about a band to connect pvc to metal-- something like a Fernco fitting? It's black rubber/plastic and has metal bands around it that can tighten to secure the fitting.

Thanks for the clarification Zanne. The plumbing is all PVC. This was done when house was built - makes me furious since I was inspecting the construction every few days. I think sheetrockers must have damaged pipe and builder decided not to do proper repairs.

Worried that I have to dig up concrete around the drain to get to enough PVC to properly cut and glue another piece.

Fernco fittings can be used on PVC to PVC as well. It is just usually used to splice together two unlike pipe types because the adhesives might not work-- like PVC to metal or PVC to ABS and so forth. On my house, there is a fernco reduction fitting from PVC to PVC.

Upon closer look, it does look like there is some sort of almost tar on your pipes there.

Does it appear to be leaking at all?

I'll defer to the experts on this one, but if it isn't leaking, it might be ok. I'm not sure how long that patch job will last though. Anyone know?

It is not leaking. House built in 2000 and no problems at all. Just now doing a renovation and noticed the repair so figured I'd ask before a lot of work goes in and has to be undone.

It kinda looks like what they used to sleeve the pvc from the concrete is that blac stuff around the pipe?

I have to agree with frito it could be a sleeve what kind of material is it
