Hi,

I was unclogging a shower drain that had a pop top drain stopper. I got the pop-top piece off but the piece that connects this to the drain broke.

I'm looking to replace this piece and was wondering what the best way to remove it is. There is nothing to really grip onto so I haven't been able to get it off. Tried various vice grips, etc but haven't had any luck. Has anyone run into this before and have any suggestions? Maybe there is another tool that might help.

Picture attached.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

If that doesn't work, you will have to cut it out.

I take a small hacksaw blade and ever so slightly cut through it in a few different spots, then take a flat head screwdriver and peel it out. It can be a little time consuming. The other option it to cut some slots into it and tap it around to unthread it.

OK, thanks for the quick responses. I'll give that a try.

cutting some slot in the top with a hacksaw and then using a flat head screwdriver to bang it off the threads worked great. Thanks again for the responses.

now that you got the piece off.

look directly below the hole. you should see a rubber washer between the shoe and the bottom of the tub.

inspect it. if it is ok proceed to next step.

get a hand full of plumbers putty, roll it in your hands. get it warm, easier to work with

make a string of it about the same thickness as your little finger

wrap that around the new strainer, pipe dope the threads

stick it in the hole and tighten it all down. puddy will squish up and out thats ok

get it tight..
