Hi All,
(hopefully I've posted on the appropriate page)
I am planning an outdoor kitchen and need help in figuring out the best way to tie in the sink drain to the main house. I am going the full permit route so the drain being tied into the house is a must. Explored the dry well options but that's a no-go in my city/state (Davis, Ca, near Sacramento).
I have experience with gas plumbing but I'm more limited when it comes to water and DWV. I intend to consult with/hire a plumbing contractor where necessary but all of the ones I've reached out to are either too busy or haven't called back. So, I'd like to plan as much as possible while I continue that search.
Here's where I'm at:
Sink is being placed about 20' away from the house in the backyard. The house is on a slab foundation. The (main house) kitchen is the closest room to the back yard. There is a cleanout next to the kitchen sink, oriented sideways on the outside wall, about 1' above the foundation. The cleanout is about 30' from where the new outdoor kitchen sink will be. I'll note that this is on the side yard where I have quite a bit of room to work with and no concrete to dig up so it's possibly an ideal location for trenches and sump basins. (vs. the other side of the house where it's basically all concrete)
1.) Is this cleanout the best location to tie into the main drain? If not, where else should I consider?
2.) Pumps/Gravity
-I'm assuming it will be more cost effective to pump the sink drain up and into the main drain, rather than digging into the foundation or driveway in front of the house. Maybe that's an incorrect assumption. I am 100% open to any/all suggestions.
-Assuming a pump is necessary - Am I better off with a pump at the sink, or gravity feeding the drain to a basin near the house and installing the pump there?
Some of the products I've been looking into:
-Saniflo/Liberty - These are advertised as being able to handle 120' horizontal + 15' vertical runs, but I will probably run into issues with check valves and venting, especially with the 30' long initial horizontal run.
-Star Water - There's a sink drain pump by Star Water that says it doesn't require any venting. Maybe that's the solution?
-I'm finding that these pumps are designed more for pumping vertically up from basements rather than horizontally from backyard kitchens. In other words, while the horizontal run might be easier for the pump, the subsequent vertical run and the lack of venting in the outdoor kitchen might be issues. Maybe I'm overthinking it.
-Any other products I should look into?
Sump Pump/Basin - Instead of placing a pump under the sink, could/should I run a traditional sloping drain to/near the cleanout that feeds into a sump basin and tie that sump pump into the main drain? Is 30' too long of a run for a horizontal drain pipe, sloping at 1/4" per foot? I have no problem digging the trench, just not sure if there's a code and/or functionality issue there. As I'm writing this all out, the sump basin/pump seems like the simplest solution but I may be underestimating some aspects of it.
Last note - I did talk to the city and they said pumps we're okay as long as it tied into the main drain of the house.
Anyways, I appreciate you taking the time to read my post. My goal is to obtain permits and manage costs where I can (of course) so I would happily welcome any thoughts/comments/suggestions. I also have some sketchup drawings that I could post if that's helpful/allowed.
Thanks!
