Southern California,
I need advice on a annoying power steering leak on a 2001 Suntracker Regency pontoon boat. This leak was bad enough that it ruined my stereo from the drips of power steering fluid.

As you can see on the attached picture, it appears the leak is coming from elbow fitting at the top of the housing. I mentioned to a boat shop owner that I was going to wrap the threads with Teflon tape, and see if the leak stops. He told me that Teflon tape will become absorbed in the system, causing me to replace the entire $700 unit. He recommended to use only the white liquid pipe sealant, and I replied that Rectorseal #5 would probably work the best. He then said that will also not work, but could not advise the actual name of the white pipe sealant.

Does anyone have any ideas on what this mechanic is talking about?

Use a good thick pipe thread tape, leave the last thread untaped, brush your #5 on top of that, again being careful not to get much if any in the last thread. It has been awhile since I have read the label of #5, but it has a very broad spectrum of things that it will seal against.

Thanks Phish. I also saw this informative video that some may find useful.

So, I drove out to the lake this afternoon and came across a tube of Rectorseal # 2. For the life of me, I could not remember why I had it, but knew there was a great need for it. I jumped on this forum, clicked on "my threads", and came across this thread. Now I know why I bought it! ;)
