Hello everybody, new to the forum, i wanted a second opinion.
i just bought a 3 stage water filtration system in the big blue filter housings, 4.5 x 20. first is a 20 micron Sediment filter followed by 2 carbon filters. I will be tapping into the water line right before it enters the house so every fixture will have filtered water. Here is my issue, the house has galvanized piping from the water main to the where it comes into the house, and it's about 100 ft. When the plumber quoted me to install the system he quoted me 900 to tap into the line and install the system , running a small line to the inside of the house, the filters will be housed in a pantry. He says that he has done systems like this before and because the galvanized piping is usually rusted (my house is a 1956) the sediment filter usually clogs and needs to be replaced every month or so. it's not expensive but i don't really want to go through all that trouble to replace the filter every month..
What is your experience with this situation, from my research i have heard of peoples carbon filters clogging up if they don't use a sediment filter, and other peoples sediment filters clogging up quickly if they are on well / other dirty water sources. the sediment filters should last me at least 3 to 6 months , there is only 2 of us so we don't use that much. I honestly do think I'll get at least 3 to 6 months out of it if i install it..

A sediment filter protects the main carbon filters, which are usually expensive. Without it, the carbon filter(s) are fouled more quickly.

The frequency of filter change depends on what is in the water. If they fill quickly, it is an indication of how bad the water really is, i.e. sediments, particulates and turbicity.

If you are going to filter the water, filter it correctly. Otherwise you (and your family) become the filters.

Do you know what your trying to remove? Or for that matter does the Plumber know what you want to remove? Or are you just putting these in because they are called filters? These filters will not remove an ounce of hardness. You need a softener for that. The carbon filters would remove chlorine if you had it in your water.

What is it that you are objecting to in your water? Have you had your water tested for hardness, PH, and the disinfectants your water dept uses? These questions should be answered before spending $900.00.

take a sample of your water, in a sanitised specimen cup with lid
not a peanut butter jar

to your health department, call first, might be different where your at

they will charge you around 3 dollars to analyze your water and give you a report

THEN, find the correct filter to take out what ever is in the report
