I am trying to replace the faucet on a sink. The sink/faucet came with the house which is about 14 years old. There are no screws under the sink that hold the faucet to the sink. I did manage to get the faucet disassembled somewhat, and that was not easy. If you look at the attached picture, you will see there are brass rings that are snug up against the top of the sink. I have been attempting to turn the brass rings with a wrench (towards the left to loosen) but the threads that it seem to be connected to, just keep spinning as well. So I just keep spinning and spinning... You can see how scarred the right ring is from turning it. If I must somehow hold the threads with a wrench (i.e. use 2 wrenches) I am worried I will scar the threads and the brass ring will never come off. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

if you're that worry'd about the threads then just cut the rings off, I would use 2 wrenches and unthread though, if you mash a thread its not the end of the world as obviouslly these arnt being re used. If seized then liquid wrench may help to free em up a little also

Regardless of which way I turn the brass ring, the threads also spin. And I am unable to remove the ring using 2 wrenches while attempting to hold the threads from not spinning while I turn the ring.

Those rings you're trying to turn hold the stems onto the top of the sink. There are also nuts that thread up the stems from underneath & tichten the stems to the sink top. Try loosening the nuts underneath. Once those are loosened the rings on the top should unthread relatively easily. If not then, as previous posters have stated, you are looking at cutting the stems loose with either a grinding wheel or hack-saw.

about time someone chimed in...

Thanks everyone. I eventually got it off. Hack-sawed, and banged it off. Ended up busting a pipe too, and had to have a plumber come out on a Sunday to fix it. He then showed me how the old faucet SHOULD have come off (hint: much easlier way). Live and learn I guess. This is what happens when a former electrician's helper tries to do a little plumbing work.
