Trying to get the expansion tank off my furnace as it is cracked and leaking. Seems like an easy item to replace. Only problem is that it is rusted onto the pipe it's attached to.

Any suggestions to free it up? I'm afraid to force to hard as I don't want to strip the tank nut or damage any other part of the furnace in the process!

I put some WD-40 in there as best I could, but that doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

Thanks in advance! Bill

Try some PB blaster or liquid wrench. Repeat soaking for a few days. WD40 isn't a good choice for loosening fittings. Be sure to have the appropriate thermal expansion tank for your (furnace?) boiler or hot water tank.

Of course double checking that there is no pressurized water or steam in the line before removing the old thermal expansion tank is mandatory.
