Im trying to replace a valve on a house built in 83/84 from the street to the house as the valve will no longer shut off the water all the way. It seems to be soldered or welded at the threads on each end of the valve on galvanized pipe, not sure why when there would’ve been better ways to do it. If soldered is there a way to remove it?will simply a torch do? Or should I I just cut out the pipe and hope it’s not some at the elbow in ground coming up. And if it is soldered/welded at the elbow what’s the best option?

What makes you think that valve is threaded? It looks soldered to me.

Also, the pipes look to be copper, not galvanized.

Can you get the water shutoff at the street, or anywhere before this valve? Is there any play in the pipe (can it be moved at all)? If soldered, a torch will un-solder it, but you will need play in the pipe to remove it. An easier solution might be to get a new ball valve, leave the old valve and cut the existing pipe to install the new ball valve. Personally, I would solder the new ball valve, but they are available as compression ball valves also.

Well ifs copper and not galvanized I guess that answers all my questions then. Thanks I appreciate it!

go rent a pro-press tool from the local rent all

buy a pro-press valve and coupling
short piece of pipe

cut the old valve out..clean the paint and bird poop off the pipe

install coupling and the new valve

caution the pipe must be free of burrs ,it must be smooth, or th o ring in the pro-pres fitting will b cut when you install the fitting
