I am looking for some advice on reducing water pipe noise in my house. When water is running through our house it almost sounds like a jet engine sometimes (for example when the irrigation system is running). I live in a 50-year old house, unfinished basement, wood floors, so there is not much to deaden the sound.

Would using pipe straps help, rather than the existing old wire hangers? Is there any way to dampen the noise by using something soft between the hanger/strap and the joist?

I'm also open to using some form of sound insulation, within reason.

Any other ideas?

Insulating the pipe may help. If pipe is hung with wire hangers, add the insulation and rehang with new hangers around the insulation to isolate them from the pipe. Check you water pressure. High pressure can also contribute to noise due to higher velocity of water traveling through the pipe.
Excessive noise is also sometimes created because the original installers did NOT ream/de-bur the pipe, causing excessive turbulence in the water flow, and you're stuck with it(unless maybe you re-pipe the system:()
