Hello fellas and ladies,

I am not a handy man at all although I've watched a few videos on fixing a leaky faucet. I know it's not the shower head so it may be the valve and O ring. I'm not sure what I have to do. This is where I am and I am wondering what the next step is. It appears I simply can't just pull everything off. Should I unscrew the black "valve cover" first and then take the whole metal thing off? Any, and all, advice is appreciated and as you can tell by my descriptions, I don't know much about this at all but it is supposedly simple. Thanks to all in advance and pictures below

So how do I remove the stem? I have to remove that black cover first, correct? And to do that, do I just unscrew the black plastic cover first? And then what about the chrome/metal plate? Does that have to come off too, to get to the stem? Sorry, I know nothing about plumbing; I'm about two to three levels below beginner

no the broke plate stays on
1 shut off hot and cold to shower
open stems half way use a socket or open end wrench
to remove stems
2 bring them to a plumbing supply hous not hd or lowes
the guys at the plumbing supply houSe will be much more knowledgeable
buy hot. and cold stems and seats you wll need a seat wrench
if you have to replace the seats the seat wrench kit might be 25-30
bucks it's universal they can also help with that buy some
(Heat grease) you put that on the brass threads and were the
handle sites onto the stem and were screw hoes into the stem
sounds like a lot but its really easy
