ALright, so this isn't the first time it's occured, it's been going on for a few months but my mom is negligent and stubborn that she doesn't want to do anything about it untill it's too late.

Last winter the pipes burst, and some shoddy plumber from the neighborhood came and fixed a few of the pipes, 2 days after he left, these two pipes burst. But he hasn't been back since. I saw the water dripping over the breaker, so I placed a plate there to divert it since at the time I had no cash to pay/buy the parts needed. Now the leaking is getting worse. And im afraid if something isn't done soon, it'll short circuit the whole house. And then we'll really be in trouble. The pipe which leads to the back yard, that water faucet we rarely use. (Washing dog, pool) but since it's nearing winter, we dont have a pool and we can use a bucket of water to wash the dog. Bought the problem up with my mom and she wants to pay hundred of dollars she thinks is going to magically appear to fix it. Long story short.
HOW SHOULD I GO ABOUT FIXING IT. I was thinking of cutting the pipe and sacrificing the back faucet, then fitting a shut off valve. Any ideas? I'd like to save some money but if you guys think it's best to call a plumber, Please post. Time is of the essence :).

Water and electricity don't mix my advice to you if you don't have any experience with plumbing call a plumber.

Called LenThePLumber, they came out, guy looked like he didn't want to be bothered. TOld me he was going to write up an estimate. Sits in truck for 15 minutes before coming back in and shoving a 485$ estimate in my face.

What he wrote

"Found leak coming from piping to outside hosebib; water running down through electric panel.

*What he planned to do*

"Repair 1/2'' copper line and install new 1/2'' shut off valve".

I feel like he's gouging me. Thoughts?

do you know what a packing nut is?

cant tell, cause someone drew all over the picture, maybe the packing nut

go and find a

3/4 compression x 3/4'' or 1/2'' mip [male thread]
and a brass threaded cap.

hacksaw the pipe into, install the compression fitting

i am assuming, where the orange x is, is 3/4 copper pipe

I had the same issue, pipes in the kitchen were leaking too and I was not doing anything about it for quite a long time, and then I called really proficient plumber and he said that id I would procrastine a little bit more, the system would cost me 10 times more. So just call professional ;)

emergency cap off of a copper pipe instructions

middle of the night, pipe busts, no store open, what do you do?

you need 1 sledge hammer and 1 hammer

hold the sledge against the pipe, hit the pipe in an extremely forceful manor with the hammer

using the sledge as a make shift "anvil" beat the pipe flat,

think about how your boss said he cant afford a raise

then beat it some more

if it drips a little, fold the end back against itself, hit it again

fix it when you can get to the store,

I mananged to call a local plumbing company, luckily they were a 24 hr service. Since I was a first time caller, the estimation was free, "YEE". Charged about 200$ less than LEN, and ended up capping off the pipe.

Thank you all for the responses, especially you Frodo :) Gave me a little chuckle but it was still real advice :)

Keep his number handy, you will have to call him back down the road when that cap he installed floods your basement. Looks like a hack job.

Yeah you could have went to Home Depot or any hardware store and picked up that cap for around 8 bucks and did it yourself call him back and get it done correctly

whats a hack job?
And when you mean by "Correctly, what are you referring".
I thought the job was done.

HACK JOB.,,,when a SOB comes into your house and charges you to do a job for premium money, but uses the must substandard materials on the market
instead of doing it "correctly"

Correctly. a SOLDERED cap is correctly, not a damn sharkebit.

sharkbites, will blow off, down the road it WILL blow off.
usually happens around 2 am. thats when everyone is in bed, the city water pressure rises, because no one is using the water.

YES water pressure rise at night AND during the work day

savy way?

I agree with Frodo.

You could have easily installed that yourself. That fitting just pushes onto to the pipe no. skills needed.
Almost no skills.
You would have to turn off the water.
Cut the pipe.
Then push the cap on.

Professionally, that's just a lazy way to fix things.

I don't use them But I have never seen an incident where one has blown off either.

. . . . . paused . . .

just did a web search for "failed sharkbite fittings."
Found some mention of some failures but even a soldered joint can fail if not don't properly.

Do your own search.
Form your own opinion.
I don't have one that's valid because I don't use them.

Is it necessary to yell at the OP?

He hired a supposedly capable plumbing service and thought all was well. Why not just inform him that it is what you consider a sub-standard repair and to either have it redone or keep a constant watch on it.

Are we retaining water these last few days? ;)

Hope the problem was solved. Leakage is a troublesome thing in the home. We found this guys recently from a brewing forum, maybe you can consider to buy motorized valve for your home water control automation, his price is much better than we saw from America market, and they accept Paypal. http://www.tf-valvefittings.com
