Kohler Toilet Handle Problem

I have an older Kohler toilet - the Couture model. The toilet handle is a non-standard unit (Model 30440-CP). I purchased an OEM replacement unit but cannot install it properly.

When the bolt and washer are fastened to normal tension the handle is tight and difficult to flush and the flapper will not seat properly after it flushed as the handle stays up.

If it is not tightened enough, the handle is too loose and flushes but the handle just drops down hangs after the flapper reseats.

Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

Can you take a picture of the handle not installed.
Take it looking at the back side of the handle and the of the shaft that goes through the hole in the tank. also of any loose parts that come with it.
The only thing I find online only are front view and line drawings.

Most holes in tanks are square. take a picture of the hole as well.
I SEE A WASHER AND NUT IN LINE DRAWING.
maybe the washer goes on out side with handle. But not likely
