Joining ABS to PVC via repair coupling

Looking for a litte reassurance here before I make a mess of things. Is it a true statement that the black ABS pipe will not dry fit into the PVC coupling? The size seems to be off by 1/8th inch. Everything I’m reading suggests this is how it is supposed to be. Once I apply the green ABS to PVC glue, the ABS softens a little as in melts and will fit into the coupling? I’m a little worried because If I have to cut anymore of this pipe I’m pulling up more sub floor.

ABS and PVC have the same size OD.

If you are talking about a PVC repair coupling without the center ridge that you slide from one pipe to the other they don't always work. Many times they scrape off the solvent and they don't weld properly.

Have you thought of using a shielded coupling?

It is the kind of coupling that has a stop in the middle. The size is so close and I bought couplings from two different stores. It’s what was on there before so I was just trying to replace it the same way. So the glue won’t dissolve the material
Enough to make a fit?

I didn’t even know what a shielded coupling was until you’re last post. I’m just trying to join 3 inch abs to 3 inch pvc. If a shielded coupling is the way to go I’m all for it. What do I look for? Are there specific couplings for this application?

Thanks bud. And that specific part can be used for both ABS and PVC? Is it true that gluing them isn’t even code? Damn. I’m finding out so many things about this house.

It can be used for ABS and PVC. It's the best way to go.
If you look at the website there are different models for all types of pipe bacause they have different outside diameters.
There are other couplings that don't have the metal band. Don't use that type.

The whole point of those fittings is to join two dissimilar pipes. Cast iron to PVC, PVC to ABS, ABS to cast iron. The metal banded ones are to code, the plain ones are not (maybe depending on where you live.)

Some states you can glue abs to pvc and then some you cannot. I would use the shielded coupling.

Where are you located Frodo?? Around here we can buy a can of all purpose glue.
