How do I, the tenant of a house rental, explain this?

Lived in this house for four months. The only issues I've had with the waterlines is one of the toilets continuously runs after flushing for at least 15 minutes and will not flush again until it is done. Other than that things have run pretty smoothly until two weeks ago. I was running the washing machine, the dishwasher, and the kitchen sink, and when I went to check on the laundry the floor drain in the laundry room was backing up water and flooding the floor. I've never noticed this happen before.

I stopped running all of the water in the house but then after an hour I went to draw a bath. The laundry room floor drain backed up again. It doesn't back up after every use of the sink or the dishwasher but here and there with the laundry room washer and the shower or tub.

The toilets also fill the bowl with water to the top after flushing without any visible blockage and slowly go down until there is barely water in the bowl. There is random gurgling in the toilets, the kitchen sink and what sounds like under the floor next to the laundry room.

I finally call the landlord and she has a plumber come out immediately. He throws snake after snake after snake into the main line in front of the house and ends up pulling out a 9 x 9" Terry cloth rag.

There is absolutely no way this towel could be one of our own.
Growing up my husband and I were both raised not to put ANYTHING in the toilet aside from tp and have had issues living with other people not obiding by these simple rules.

So after the plumber pulls out the culprit, my landlady paid the standard $157 for the snake job but is convinced that we did it. She says that before we moved in she had "her plumber" take care of clearing all the pipes "before" we moved in. she claims she paid this other plumber $500 to clear every pipe in the house and did not use him for this job because since then he's moved to Arizona.

To me it sounds like she got ripped off & I know for a FACT that neither my husband or I flushed or stuffed this mysterious rag down a drain so is there anyway this could have happened unbenownst to either of us?

I ask because even though she paid for it, she is still lecturing me to use trash cans in the bathroom and just stupid obvious things I've done my whole life. I would cover the cost of the job in a second to shut her up but we are SO broke.

It sounds like she got scammed by her previous plumber, who wasnt even looking for anything specific & I would really like to have something to say to her if she tries to hold us respobsible for this rag we've never seen in our lives.

Sidenote: this house was built in '58 & looks like it hasnt been taken care of very well (We are broke in our 20's & dont have a lot of options.) Also, before we could even mow the lawn, the backyard had some garbage scattered, thought it was the neighbors kids, but we recovered rags, socks, toys, fake jewlery and even a butcher's knife out from the lawn. The plumber didnt see any drain or access point in the back when trying to find a point to snake from but could it be possible a flood from the rain pushed a rag into our system?

Any possible explanations or questions will be appreciated.

Hopefully, if she hasn't already held you responsible for the cost of the plumber she won't do so. Perhaps a gesture or two of goodwill around the house or yard would help appease her to feel like she has been compensated somewhat.

Thankfully she did assume the cost of the job. I'm just hoping she doesnt change her mind and take it out from our deposit (only $157.) Everytime she calls I feel like she's going to ask me to pay part or all of it.

I have yet to inform her of the hours and hundreds of dollars we have spent cleaning, sanding, painting, scrubbing & digging up debris in the yard to make this place livable. We just really needed the size of this house and sacrificed a lot of time and labor because the rent was ideal. I don't want to seem combatative, but if she brings it up again then I will let her know. Hopefully that will appease her.
Thank you!

My opinion. The rag was there before you got there I have never ever had a landlord call me up to just snake out there drains for no reason I call bs that they did that before you moved in. Especially if the property don't look taken well care of. I would also make my landlord prove that if they going to try and make me pay. So keep that in mind if they try that. People see young people and try to take advantage of you and that's bs. I will say that it sounds like your landlord is going to be a pain in the ass about anything they have to do for your place so you might have issues with them in the future. I would also insist ( if this happens again) that the sewer line is scoped with a camera and the landlord can be shown either it's completely clear or there is junk in there that way there is no question next time

little advice on moving into rental property.
buy a news paper. throw it on the floor before moving in.
take a video of the apartment, DO NOT turn the video off during this process
video walls floors doors, everything, the newspaper has a date on it, video the date

now you have proof of the condition of the property when you moved in.

when you get ready to move, video it again after you clean.

this is proof you are leaving it as you found it.

if it winds up in small claims court you will win
