Hello everyone, thank you all in advance for any help with this. My wife and I bought a house last July that was built in 1925. The house has a large unfinished basement, and in this basement there is a pipe that I have no clue what it's for. There are two normal standpipes that are currently being used for the homes plumbing. You can see those in the following pictures.

This next picture is the pipe in question. As you can see it looks cut-off and even appears to have been filled with cement or mortar of some kind.

Is this pipe something I can use? I mean I know I'd obviously have to clean out the cement, create a vent pipe, and attach it all somehow using a Fernco, but do you guys think this pipe connects to the main sewer line for the house? I'd like to be able to use it for a drain for the kitchen sink, the dishwasher, and a washing machine. It would be nice it I could use one of the other two existing standpipes, but the logistics of their location in relation to the sink/washer/dishwasher makes this very difficult.

Additional question. If that pipe is unuseable for whatever reason for these plumbing needs, what would be the general concensus in running the drain lines for these appliances to the sump pit and letting the sump pump take care of it? Here's my sump pit/pump.

Thank you everyone in advance, I really appreciate all your help!

Without taking a walk thru myself, id say at one point it was probably used to pick up your rain water leaders, and for whatever reason (theres a few why this isnt done any more) it was removed from service.

Thank you for replying Matt.

"Pick up your rain water leader". I don't know what that means. I looked it up and found out that a rain water leader is the same thing as a downspout, but I couldn't find any reason why one would be in my basement. Would that tie into the main sewer line? Obviously I'm not a pro or anything, so could you help me understand what you meant please?

Thanks!

Your home could have/had multiple septic system and the piping in pic#3 might be from a abandoned septic system. I would not tie the kitchen/laundry drain to the sump pump. You can install a sewage ejection system for the kitchen/laundry drain.

I figured it out, with some help. That pipe is an old coal gasification line installed way back before natural gas. While cool learning that bit of history, it doesn't help much with my drain issues. I guess im going to route thee kitchen/laundry to my sump for now, and revisit the drain issue once the stairs are built. Nothing can ever be easy.

Thank you everyone for your help!
