Hi all,

Recently I had a guy come in and fix our sump pump because it wasn't working correctly. He came in and got it to stop leaking and all, but right after he did this I noticed I have no hot water. The water might get slightly warmer or not any warmer at all. Its been 2 months now. Any idea how this might have happened?

Thanks,

PJ

Maybe there is something with sump pumps that I am not aware of, as they are a rare oddity down here. But I don't think that a sump pump should have anything to do with your hot water. If the thermostat on your water heater is exposed (many gas water heaters have exposed thermostats) check to make sure that it hasn't been turned way down.

Yeah, sump pumps have absolutely nothing to do with hot water. they are there to remove floodwater/seepage from your building and are not connected to your water supply at all.

In some cases the sump will be very close to the water heater (usually in a furnace or utility room) and if this is the case it is possible that your repair guy bumped your thermostat (or even snagged it with his clothes if it is an old style) much as phishfood suggests.

It is also possible that your heating element or something else has gone wrong with the heater, the timing being coincidental.
