Hello,

I have a few questions about water softening options. My water is in the medium/high hardness range (according to testing strips) and I was wondering:

a) Is a water softening system necessary due to the damage the scaling and mineral deposits can cause, or is it just a personal preference?

b) If it is necessary, is there any difference in terms of damage mitigation between the traditional salt based systems and the non-salt based ones? The non-salt on average are more expensive but don't seem to need much maintenance and the upkeep costs are lower.

c) Any recommendations or specific non-recommendations (definitely don't get)?

I really enjoy my daily emails from this forum and in-depth knowledge from members and any advice is greatly appreciated.

Alex

Hello Alexander,

I will try to answer some of your questions to the best of my ability. So, I live in a really rocky zone where most of the ground is made up off rocks so water here is naturally heavier/alkaline so I personally use a water softener to get rid off so many minerals that water contains here because it can actually be really unhealthy for you.

I can't answer your second question really well but I will try, for me, and this is talking about me, I use a salt based system, mainly because it was cheaper for the to get a salt based system and it works well because we work a lot with marine salty water, as far as costs go, it could sometimes be a little bit costly to upkeep a salt based water softener but trust me, if you do your maintenance on schedule, you will most likely not have too much trouble with it.

As far as my recommendations go, I use a Nuvo H20 DPHB Home salt water softener system, I recon it might not be the one that works for you so I will leave a link to a site for you to look at more filters at, you can look at some other water softener systems here. Just be careful for what you buy because depending on the type of water in region you might need to use a different water softener system, the same ones don't work for everybody.

I hope this has helped you a bit, Talk soon!

Also I forgot, be sure to choose well from the water softener types, there are salt free softeners, reverse osmeosis softeners, magnetic softener etc.

Thank you very much! I will do a little more research in the type of hard water we have her in DC to make sure i get the correct type of system.
