I just bought a new house and it has a finished attic. The bathroom on the attic level has a shower and sink, neither of which get hot water. I checked to see if the hot water was turned off and it is not, so some preliminary searching has indicated this is a pretty common problem due to the vertical separation of the water heater and bathroom. The water heater is a Rheem 50 gallon, brand new located in the basement.

My question is two fold. Why does this happen? I thought city water pressure was responsible for getting water around the house. If it can get cold water up there, why not hot? Second, part is how do I fix it?

Thanks in advance.

There must be a valve shutting off the hot water that is closed...
