How do you empty a used water softener, so it will become lighter for transport?

There is a tool you can buy that with the help of a garden hose will vacuum the media out. It's a bit messy but keeps you from having to try and lift that heavy tank to tip it over. The tip it over method is not always successful without the use of a garden hose.
