What is the ramification(s) of using an overflow sink drain and the bowl itself not having an overflow drain?

Many sinks that don't have overflows are thin were the pop up goes through it leaving the opening in the pop up drain for the overflow below the sink. You will find most of these sinks in mobile homes, and there made of steel. If the sink is thick enough to keep the opening for the overflow above the bottom of the sink then there is no problem with it.

John. As usual you are most helpful. I was concerned that maybe standing water within the overflow tube section would permit water trapped at the area to grow bacteria and create an odor.

Maybe I worry too much... :(
