Hi.

I had to do some work, and at some point was left with a exposed 5/8 male compression coupling. So, I got a 5/8 compression plug cap, to close off the exposure. No teflon, no paste, no nothing. It started dripping water quite bad once I turned the pressure on (regular water pressure, actually capped at 50psi on that line).

As I understand it, compression is in general works by the fact that the ring is squeezed between the nut and the pipe, creating a secure connection. With the cap, there is nothing to squeeze, so I guess water just feels free to flow throw the threads. Or should I have put the ring in there all the same?

Thanks.

You need to put a ferrule (or what you call a compression ring) in the fitting before tightening the cap. Just be sure it doesn't lay on it's side in the fitting.
