Hi all my husband and I just bought our first house. We knew there would be some things to fix as the house has been vacant for over a year. When we had the inspection done we found out the toilet on the main floor was leaking and the cast iron soil pipe has some old leaks in it. My question is...

Is there a temporary patch that we can use on the cast iron soil pipe itself?

When we remove the toilet to see if we just need a new wax ring if there's a problem with the flange is there something we can replace it with?

Eventually in the near future we are going to go full PVC throughout the house which is only 1 story so it shouldn't be that much of a problem to switch over.

I attached some pictures, sorry for the quality and thanks for any suggestions. I saw someone recommended Harvey's Soil Seal in another post, I wonder if we clean up the areas if we could use that on the pipe?

If it's just the wax seal and maybe a flange replacement it's a simple repair. There are many replacement flanges that can be used. If you have holes in the cast iron pipe replacement is the best option. I can't tell if the smaller lines that are connected to the cast iron are PVC or copper. There are some water spots on the line next to the ceiling. Are they from the leak above or is the pipe leaking? If it is leaking and it's copper that will also needs to be replaced.

We believe it's from the leak up above, and from what we were told they are galvanized pipe. That's the sink line and the tub is the other one going into the stack.
