cartridge removal assistance

Hello all,

new here however i have a leaking cartridge in my shower on the hot water side. I removed the handle to access the cartridge, however the cartridge doesn't have any flat spots for a wrench. I did some research online and couldn't find another one like it. Sent photos to a plumber friend of mine and he;s never see this style either.

any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

It looks like, once the handle is off, the narrow neck of the metal barrel is ribbed.

So that is likely meant to be grabbed by a pipe wrench or channel lock type pliers, and unscrewed.

Looks like the grout around it at the tile will need to be replaced, it seems ready to fall out if you sneeze too hard.

The tub needs caulking too, before you get tiles falling off.

That piece wouldn't move with channel locks, I'll try a pipe wrench when i get home. One thing at a time! lol

Also, know what style cartridge that is so i can order a replacement?

Lay some thick towels in the tub.

If the wrench slips, it will take a chunk out of it.

I can’t tell if that ribbed piece is separate from the rest of the barrel.
It might be.

When the cartridge comes out, take it to a plumbing supply house, otherwise there are sites we can post links to with about two hundred pictures of different cartridges, to identify it.

Yes, and towels will keep stuff from going down the drain.

Get an overflow drain cover while you are at it.

Measure the distance between the screw holes, center to center.
And find a machine screw laying around somewhere that fits the threads, so you can match that also.

I have the overflow cover, i removed it to clean it.

Since it didn't want to move on first try, you might want to try getting some vinegar on the mineral buildup to soften/loosen it up. Give it some time, vinegar soaked rag?

I might use two wrenches, one on front, and one (carefully, with towel? not to mar finish) used in opposite direction on chromed exposed rear section.

Do like they said and use the vinegar method to soften things up and then you can try a rubber strap wrench first to
see if it will come off. If it doesn't put your channel locks as close to the wall that you can then if you do scratch it up
hopefully the escusion will cover it up. Then take a picture of the cartridge so we can maybe help identify it.

***UPDATE***

So I was able to remove the cartridge, needed a large pipe wrench on the small silver section of the cover. Then just had to wiggle the cartridge out. Once I did that the spring and rubber grommet shot out. I didn't have a replacement cartridge and didn't have time to pick on up, so as a band aid i stretched the spring out a little so it will apply more tension to the cartridge when I reinstalled it hopping that will stop the leak. I worked!!! I'll get a new cartridge this weekend.

Looks like Delta/Peerless.
You might just need the spring and boot rebuild kit, sold everywhere.

Some kits have that skinny o ring also.

Clean any minerals or crud off the surface of the cartridge that rests on that black rubber boot.
And clean crud from inside the valve body, or chunks can tear up the new boot or the o ring.

Put some silicone plumbers’s grease on the o ring and boot and bottom of cartridge.

Yeah, before you suggested the towel in the tub, I'd plug the drain for just that reason. lol
