Hi, I have a residential home question. Where I live the water pressure in the AM is fairly abysmal in the low 30's psi wise. I suspect this is due to sprinkler usage and other factors. I am interested in installing a booster pump to keep a more even household pressure. My question is with my problem being intermittent do I need to take any special precautions in installing. my normal pressure is high 40's low to mid 50's in the afternoon and evening. I have noticed several booster pumps specify an input pressure of no more than 20 psi. Are most pumps able to handle intermittent pressure losses such as i describe? Do I need a pressure control valve before the pump, after the pump, or both? Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Just use a regular shallow well jet pump for a booster. With a 40/60 pressure switch the pump just won't come on if the city is supplying 40+ PSI. And if you use a Pside-Kick kit to control the jet pump, you will have 50 PSI constant pressure to the house and be able to use a really small pressure tank. See this link.

Stay away from the little so called "tankless" controls or the variable speed pumps if you want something that will last.

Thanks so much. This is what i needed to know. You have any jet pump you suggest?

Goulds JS series has always been my favorite. But I have had problems with a couple of them lately. Cast iron housing and a good brand motor is what to look for. And make sure the pump you choose can build a max pressure of at least 10 PSI more than the pressure switch shut off point. You don't want to work any jet pump with the pressure switch close to the max pressure the pump can build.
