Bathtub faucet spindle removal

I need to replace my bathtub spindle, the problem is that its 60 years old and
doesnt have a six pointed bonnet nut that accepts those special sockets it only
has 2 flat sides on it. Is there a special tool to remove it. Any help would be appreciated.
