I am replacing a bath tub in a concrete slab. The drain in the new tub is 1" further from the wall than the old one. There is a heavy tar like substance which the pipe is set in. How do I remove this tar to extend the pipe? Do I heat it up out cut it out?

I would use a wood chisel, flat prybar, or something similar to break and then pry out the tar. For that is what it is, tar that was poured in there to seal the hole. Don't heat it up unless you like getting it all over you, and having to use gasoline or WD40 to get it off of you.

Nasty, hateful stuff, and I am glad that using it has gone out of vogue.
