unscrew the nut and pull out the rod. Probably a plastic pivot ball on the rod
sometime the crack or get messed up.
HD might have a generic rod replacement kit But not sure.

30 sec to peek at HD and they had this Universal-Ball-Rod-for-Pop-Up-Drains

I can not unscrew the nut containing the pivot ball. A colleague of mine has stated to buy a new pop up waste.

My thoughts exactly. Could I plug the holes up with plumbers Mait to form a water tight temporary fix?

You have a pair of plyers ?
th

use them to loosen the pop up nut

I have pliers but they did not loosen the nut, the pliers were slipping as such on the nut rounding it off, even with a tight grip.

I don't think that pop up has a capture nut on the bottom side of sink.
No threads on main body. Look inside near rod you can see threads.
I think the top flange screws in like a tub drain flange.
If you can't unscrew it take a hack saw and cut it off from the bottom right where the caulking is. Install a new pop-up.
Not going to be easy! That looks like a Pedestal sink.
Remove the trap, pull the sink off the wall.
