I thought this was a sump pump / basin - bur aren't they supposed to have liners and a cover and not full of dirt? Anyway, this is in my basement. The pump died the other day (probably due to all the mud that gets sucked in) and I had to to replace it. Need to get this sorted properly as the same will happen to the new pump otherwise.

It is raining quite hard right now, but still not sure that this much water should be coming in???

Thanks for any input...

Pump should be raised so it's not sitting in mud, it was fairly common practice years ago to not have them in any kind of basin. They ran your weeping tile to the sump pit to control ground water around your foundation.

Thank you Matt for the feedback. It sounds like what I have then is not too abnormal. However, if I told you that it was connected to the outside of the house with a garden hose and no valve to stop the water flowing back, i'm sure you'd laugh!

I'll look into getting a stand for it - will have to dig some dirt out of the bottom first though as the floating switch would be too high. I'll also put in proper drainage pipe too - i'm sure that the diameter of the garden hose must be putting some strain on the pump.
