I'm going to have a water meter installed and will have to run approximately 600' of line to my barn. In the future, I plan to put my house about 400' from the meter. I plan to have a few lines branching out to water trees and cattle along the 600'.

I can get a 1/2" meter or pay an upgrade fee (about $1,000) for a 5/8" meter.

I asked the guy from the water company what could be done to get better pressure at the end of the line (I assume I will lose some pressure. Of course, I won't be running all the faucets at once.) He recommended using a 3" line for the 600' stretch and then branching with the typical 1/2" lines to the faucets.

He mentioned the thicker pipe assists with the "C-Force" and reduces friction loss as long as the pipe is level along the 600'.

My questions are:
1) Is the 5/8" meter a good investment over the 1/2"?
2) What is recommended for the 600' span?
3) What's the difference between water flow and water pressure? What is it that I want, pressure or flow?
4) Any other advice is welcome....

Do you not already have a meter on your house?

It was an empty 5 acre tract. Just put up a barn (will install a sink/toilet), no house yet.

just a country boy, do not have charts and graphs. all i can tell you is what I have done in a situation such as yours

1 1/2'' 400' to house, 1'' 200' to hose bibs from house
my opinion others may differ

I don't know what the PSI is... I do know that my meter will be installed near the end of the 8" line that currently ends short of my property. It will be extended to end within my property, where the meter will be installed.

I don't currently have anything other than the barn.

8" seems a bit excessive. Normally to a house I have ran 2" about 500' to house. Because to go any bigger would have required an act of congress I think. But that was just a house. Is this the municipality putting in the meter?

The municipality is installing the 1/2" or 5/8" meter off their 8" main line.
