AC Sewer Pipe Questions

In looking at some very old city (late 50's - early 60's) plans and as-builts; it appears that my sewer line is Asbestos Cement (AC). In researching AC I find that it was a pretty common product back then, but is nearing the end of its design life.

I may be doing a complete demo and rebuild on the property and wanted to know what are some options to tying in to the old line. My new build fixture units will be within the 4" size and I will use PVC or ABS for the new sewer.

Is it possible to connect PVC/ABS to AC? Is that just a no-hub connection? Should I be concerned with having to replace the whole thing to the street? Where does the city's obligation end and mine start? Anything else I should know about AC?

Thanks to anyone with some knowledge of this product. Expect this is a infrastructure concern that will be popping up a bunch if end of life service for AC is now upon us.

That's a new one on me. I have never heard of or seen AC sewer drain lines.
Here they used to use Clay tile pipe before cast iron and in some places during the Big war they used orangeburg due to iron being used to build ships and weapons.

Check with your local plumbing suppliers and building authorities.

no,,,that stuff can be cut with a demo saw only. and even then its iffy it wont crumble

the cement is weak.

dig it up, follow it back to the tap, replace with pvc

Snap cutters are the way we cut it. As for a coupling it all depends on the OD. On AC pipe there were two different wall thicknesses so you will have to check. You could probably use a wide range romac type water line coupling to join the two materials? I would dig back to your property line which is usually where it transitions to yours and replace with sdr35 PVC pipe.
