The only manuals I can find on this water heater show the anode rod at the top of the tank, however there is no unused opening there on my unit. There is the electrical conduit opening, hot & cold pipe attachments and the T&P connection, the three plastic covers just have insulation foam under them from what I can determine - I'm perplexed on how to find the anode rod.

I believe some of State waters heaters do not have a serviceable anode.

if the tank is 18 years old I would not spend any money on it. it will go in the next year or two.

Well i changed out the scuzzy heating elements for a few bucks and the temp is back up there from the house faucets. That'll buy me some time until I figure out what I want for a replacement - the newer ones with the heat pumps on top ain't cheap.

It could be attached to the outlet. what is the serial number?
