A contractor recently finished tiling my new shower. After he was done I noticed that the valve where my handheld shower head would attach is inset 1.25 inches from the edge of the tile. What I'm trying to attach looks to need it to be flush. I could cut out a hole big enough to reach the valve, but then the cover won't fit on the piece, because of where the hose for the handheld head would attach. I think what I need is some sort of short brass 3/4 extension with a male end to attach to the valve and a female end to attach the handheld. I can't find such an extension, but maybe from lack of knowing what it would be called. I would appreciate any help! I've attached a few pictures as well.

You’re screwed, literally. The ell in the wall is not set back deep enough.

I’m not aware of a way to correct your issue without moving the ell in the wall deeper.

Sorry.

It’s not clear to me WHAT you are trying to attach there. If that’s a standard shower ell above the valve it sure looks like a typical angled shower head stub would screw right in. Then the head (or, hose in the case of a hand held) screws right into the end of that.

Perhaps you have something not standard?

To be clear, are you saying the ell is too far back inside the wall for the shower to catch the threads?

I have seen a 1/2” brass extension like your asking. It came with a shower kit from China a customer ordered. The kit came with brass 1/2” female x 1/2” male extensions like 1” long. It looks like that may be too much for you. Not sure how to order individuals either.

Are you sure if you remove enough tile to get the threads the escutcheon will not cover it?

The hole in the wall is too small and it appears the threaded part in the wall is not set deep enough.

If it’s not set deep enough a close nipple will be too long and not allow the escutcheon of the handheld connection ell to sit flush with the tile.

That’s what it looks like to me.

The picture of the goofy gizmo he is trying to mount, and the story behind it, is not making sense to me.

Looks like the back end of a handheld wall mount ell with a nipple in it.

You can see the big square part that has to go into the wall. Then you still need room fir the nipple.

ell in the wall is too close.....should’ve been mounted father back and the tile needs to be cut out square.

Then at this point, he should toss that square plastic crap and just get a normal shower head arm and escutcheon.

Or modify the plastic part, maybe cut off all the smaller square part on the back, and show us the front and the rest of the mount to see what it is like.

The plumber and the tile setter should have been shown that goofy piece before hand.

I've put in a number of handhelds and I have no idea how any handheld I've seen relates to what photo he shows.

What that photo DOES seem to show is the black square plastic "frame" that surrounds a shower valve so the installer knows where to mount it...but I could be wrong.

Here’s what the guy has I believe. Click the link and look at the pictures.

it’s a shower wall ell and he has slid the square escutcheon toward the front.

He needs the right length nipple. I mailed a guy one a few weeks back. Same problem here.

Yes, That is what I installed for that lady. She ordered a China mail order kit. I had to make sure the drop eared ells were perfect before tile. It worked. I didn’t use the extension adapters it came with. My eared ell looked just like his so he must be close.

Yeah, his drop ell in the wall may bit be set deep enough. The all thread close nipple that came with the decorative handshower ell may be too long. Worst case scenario.

A better scenario would be the nipple provided was too short. You can always get a longer nipple or make one out of MIP adapters and copper pipe.

Funny you said “all thread close nipple” cause I see that’s China’s style. No taper to their nipples.

That link doesn’t work for me. I was going to post it but decided it was broke.

Yah, there’s not much too it. You just have to have the correct the nipple length.
