hi there, im trying to disconnect the gas pipe that connects to the water tank gas control. i was able to disconnect the sediment trap and the nipple that conencts to it. but im unable to remove the pipes above the T. i tried disconnect the union above the T, (the big nut looking fitting), and it wouldn't budge. im only using channel locks but maybe i need a large pipe wrench? i was trying to undo it counter clockwise. any tips ?

Two wrenches...one pipe wrench and a channel locks should do it. But if it's only 1/2 you shouldn't need any expensive tools.

Whether channel locks or wrenches you need two. You may be mis reading the union. Many hundreds of times and occasionally it happens. Depending which way you are seeing it and which way the nut is coming from, counter clockwise may actually tighten.

i believe the union threads onto the pipe below, as i can see threads on the under side of the union. so i figure i turn counter clockwise to loosen the union, while perhaps holding the bottom pipe so with channel locks.
