Hello,

Recently, the neighbour from the house that is attached to ours came to our door very angrily complaining about my mom and me slamming doors too much. This is to the extend that the neighbours´ house vibrates and makes some of her stuff falls down. We, however, know for a fact that we don´t slam our doors shut this hard and don´t know where this is coming from. I read online about water hammer and that this is a sort of banging noise. Could water hammer sound or feel like a door is being shut or something similar? Sorry if this question is inappropriate for this forum.

Thanks!

It's possible, need more information does it happen the same time every day, when doing laundry, when the irrigation is running when the dishwasher is running, when using futures....things like that

Thank you for your answer. I cannot provide this information right now, hopefully later. We don´t hear the noise ourselves, and the neighbour is not at all up for a conversation about it. I have no idea when or how frequent it is heard, all I know is that it is apparently quite troublesome.

If the neighbor is not up for a conversation about it then how do they expect it to get resolved? I would think they would want to share more information like what time of day do they hear the banging, what day of the week.. etc. Then you can find out if it's the water pipes, etc.

She wants it to get resolved by trying to kick us out of the house (although I realize there's no way she can make that happen), because we are 'lying'. I just wanted to explore the possible causes for the noise she hears, because it's certainly not us causing it. But if this water hammer in the water pipes is a possible reason for a noise that sounds like a door slamming shut, I will try to talk to her about this.

Hello,

Attached how? Side by side, or is she in a unit below or above yours?

Do your water pipes run past her house above ground somehow, including within a wall?

It would be odd for her to hear a water hammer that you don't. Less odd if there is a pipe going to or from your house that runs by hers, and that shakes enough to bang up against something in her house (a wall, a support attached to a wall). For instance, if her house was below yours, a poorly supported sewage pipe might bang when you flush a toilet.

Are there any other houses "attached" in this complex? I'm trying to understand how she assigns the source of the noise to your house.

There is also always the possibility that she is nuts and that there is no actual noise.

Yeah it sounds like the neighbors are lying or making it up. If they don't want to talk about details to get it resolved, it has to be because they are lying and making it up. Or something else is not adding up.
